NEW BALANCE HSW PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OFFENSE

Stephen Skon - Lindenhurst High School, L.I.
Sophomore Quarterback - 6-foot, 180 pounds

They'll talk about the drive the tenth-grader pulled off late in the game for a long time. The first-year varsity quarterback, with his team trailing three-time defending champion William Floyd, Skon completed four big passes on the drive with less than two minutes remaining, including the 24-yard game-winner with 1:06 left, as the Bulldogs moved on to the Suffolk County Division-I final against Connectiquot. The victory, the biggest in Lindenhurst football history, snapped the Colonials New York state-best 42-game winning streak.

DEFENSE

Greg Kohles
- St. Peter's Prep, N.J.
Senior Safety - 6-foot, 190 lbs

The two-year varsity starter played a huge role in this game, leading our number three Jersey City school to a 17-15 Parochial Group IV victory over Red Bank Catholic. His first interception early in the first quarter led to a touchdown, and the A-student's final interception on the goal line with 42 seconds remaining, allowed St. Peter's to move on to a semifinal meeting this weekend with our number one Don Bosco Prep squad.

NYJ/NYG HS Football Coaches of the Week

Each week, the Jets and Giants select a tri-state area coach of the week. Each program receives a $1,000 donation from the NFL.

New York Jets

Rich Gianchiglia - Middlesex High School, N.J.
Seventh year; career record: 42-27

The coach, who graduated from Middlesex in 1994, has come back to lead his alma mater to one of the best years in the school’s history. After last weekend's 16-14 victory over Island Park in the first round of the Central Jersey Group I playoffs, the former defensive back led his team to their first postseason victory since 1984.

New York Giants

Kevin Carty, Jr. - Bound Brook High School, N.J.
Third year; career record: 24-5

The former standout quarterback at Somerville High School is now running the show for Bound Brook, and after this weekend's 26-14 victory over Florence in the Central Jersey Group I quarterfinals, third-seeded Bound Brook won their first postseason game since 1978. With the victory, they improved to 9-0 for only the second time in school history.
