MSG Celebrates Its Novel History With 'Boxing Wednesdays'
New York, NY, June 8, 2010 – MSG celebrates Madison Square Garden’s storied boxing history with ‘Boxing Wednesdays’ on the network each week throughout the summer. Every Wednesday night, fans of the sweet science can catch a variety of boxing programming that includes MSG’s Fight Night Classics, top amateur action with Golden Gloves, and follow one of New York’s favorite fighters, John Duddy. ‘Boxing Wednesdays’ is part of MSG’s Summer Block Party programming.
“MSG’s Fight Night Classics”: Top boxing matches at Madison Square Garden from the 1930s through the 1980s, including Rocky Marciano vs. Joe Louis in 1951 and the Floyd Patterson vs. George Chuvalo match-up which was dubbed Ring Magazine’s 1965 Fight of the Year. Each bout includes commentary from current and former boxers, trainers, referees, boxing historians and journalists.
“Golden Gloves”: Amateur boxing holds a special place in the lore of Madison Square Garden. MSG will showcase six new hour-long shows from this year’s Golden Gloves tournament and 14 classics from Golden Gloves past.
John Duddy: John Duddy has fast become one of New York’s favorite fighters and holds a 9-0 record at the World’s Most Famous Arena. This summer MSG will showcase eight of his exciting fights, including the brawl against Luis Ramon “Yory Boy” Campas from 2006, and his battle on the eve of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2007 against Anthony “The Bullet” Bonsante.
‘Boxing Wednesdays’ is part of MSG’s “Summer Block Party,” a lineup of theme night programming on the network that will begin every evening at 8:00 p.m. “Summer Block Party” showcases two new original series, “TXT MSG” and “MSG Countdown,” new episodes of “MSG Vault,” “Game 365,” and “Halls of Fame,” and a lineup of hit concerts and classic movies.
