MSG Launches "Los Knicks En Espanol"

New York, NY (February 14, 2012) – MSG announced today that it will be producing “Los Knicks en español”, 15 Knicks games in Spanish, beginning Wednesday, February 15 when the Knicks host the Sacramento Kings. All games will feature the play-by-play call of Spanish-speaking commentators, Clemson Smith Muñiz and Juan “Tiny” Cains.  Former St. John’s star, NBA veteran, and New Yorker, Felipe López, will serve as halftime analyst for many of the games.

Smith Muñiz has been a part of the MSG Network Spanish-language radio and secondary audio programming (SAP) teams since 1994, and Cains since 1999, when both Smith Muñiz and Cains began calling Knicks games in Spanish via SAP.

“Hispanics account for more than 20 percent of the New York area population, with nearly five million in MSG’s area of coverage,” said Michael Bair, president, MSG Media. “We’re proud to bring these games and our award-winning Knicks coverage to our large audience of passionate and loyal Spanish-speaking fans.”

Accompanying Spanish language commentary will be all-Spanish graphics throughout the telecast. Some highlights from the 15-game package of games include back-to-back games on March 11 and 12 featuring the Knicks-Sixers and Knicks-Bulls respectively, and the last regular season home game that pits the Knicks against Blake Griffin’s Los Angeles Clippers. (Full schedule of games below.) The games will be available to Cablevision, Verizon FiOS, DIRECTV and  RCN subscribers among others.

Knicks ratings on MSG this season are up 71 percent through 24 games, compared to the first 24 games telecast by MSG last season, and the past four games featuring new Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin have seen a 52 percent increase above season-to-date average.

The New York DMA has the second largest Hispanic population in the U.S.
